Life Cycles Phenology Record Keeping Software

Life Cycles Overview

Life Cycles phenology software is specifically designed for recording annual phenological observations and retrieving data in the form of numerous screen displays and printed reports. It was created by custom software developers at Scott Software Systems and its intended usage is for study, science class project, research, education and entertainment in the nature sciences (specifically phenology).

Adult Robin Feeding Young by Gregory K. ScottSome phenological observations of common events like the first robin of Spring are "recorded" casually as mental notes. Others may record their nature observations in journals or field notes. These methods certainly keep the tools simple. But locating and comparing information from year to year is cumbersome at best. Life Cycles phenology software simplifies data collection and handles your data comparison needs with ease and accuracy.

Tracking phenological events with Life Cycle's can be as critical or as casual as demands require. For example, a casual entry might be as simple as entering the common name of a plant or animal along with the observed date of an associated phenological event. For more critical needs, the capability of the program to include Latin names (using the scientific names pick list), longitude, latitude, altitude, site#, slope and aspect data may also be important. Additionally, many users find the unlimited-space, memo fields are a great place to keep extensive field notes of their nature observations.

A variety of useful reports, displays and other features are available for comparing and sharing data. Outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds are finding the Life Cycles phenology program to be a valuable and user-friendly tool for chronicling their specific phenological interests and observations.

Features & System Requirements

Features:

Keyboard shortcuts and mouse activated procedures make data entry and retrieval fast and easy. In addition to the standard data entry fields (item - species - event - date - site # - nearest city - state/province - longitude - latitude - elevation - slope face - slope angle - exposure) a memo field is available for recording field notes or observations of any length. The number of records is limited only by available disk space.

A variety of flexible reports and comparisons can be output to either screen displays or the printer. Various reports can be selected to display all items, selected items or individual items and which can include event/date comparisons - earliest - latest - average - frequency of occurrence and more.

The Work Sheet printout is a handy hard copy report for recording phenological information in the field. It contains each unique event, a statistical summary of previous year's records and space to write the current year's entries.

Utilities are available for saving your reports in various formats or for exporting or transferring data into other programs such as databases, spread sheets or word processing programs. These utilities are very useful for allowing you to share your data with others.

More details about specific features of Life Cycles are available as a free download in the form of the documentation files - available in zipped MS Word format (LC_docs.zip - 519K). You can also download a shareware version of the software itself.
